The visit of the city of Arezzo starts from the place where the Cathedral of San Donato rises majestically
and the Medici Fortress, the place where the first residential nucleus developed in the Etruscan era.
The Cathedral of San Donato houses important works of art, including the Maddalena di Piero della
Francesca, the elegant stained glass windows of the French painter and glassmaker Guillaume de Marsillat.
The route continues towards the main square “Piazza Grande”, where medieval tower houses with
graceful wooden balconies marry Renaissance architecture such as the Logge di Giorgio
Vasari, the apse of the ancient parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, a beautiful example of Romanesque art and
the elegant Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici.
Piazza Grande is also the place where the famous Giostra del Saracino takes place, a chivalric tournament
which has its roots in the Middle Ages and the Antiques Fair.
Artists, writers and illustrious poets, musicians have crowned the city, leaving their precious operas
creating an animated cultural center.
